Sumario:Background: During the subjective measurement of astigmatic refractive error, the recommended targets for the Jackson Cross Cylinder (JCC) test are interchanged often depending on availability, convenience, and preference of clinicians. However, reliability of the JCC test becomes uncertain. Methods: A cross-sectional, quantitative research design was used to compare measurements of cylinder power and axis with the JCC test but with three different targets (a cluster of random dots, the letter O, and the letter H). Randomisation of order of targets was applied to prevent biases. Data was captured using SPSS (version 27) and analysed using dependent-samples Wilcoxon signed-rank tests and Bland-Altman plots at a 95% confidence level. Results: A total of 61 left eyes of 72 subjects, with cylinders of at least -0.50 D after subjective refraction, were analysed. The study found no statistically or clinically significant difference in the subjective measurement of cylindrical power and axis with the JCC test irrespective of the target used. Random dots and the letter H were the most and the least preferred targets, respectively. Conclusion: The clinical implication of this study is that random dots, circular letters, and non-circular letters can be used interchangeably to measure the cylinder power and axis of mild astigmatism.
