Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) is one of the first thinkers who comes to mind when it comes to the theory of democracy. Therefore, the object of this study is to analyze Tocqueville's views on the nature of democracy in order to understand the challenges that democracy faces. Research question is to what extent Tocqueville's conceptualization of democracy can constitute a meaningful reference point for contemporary debates. Tocqueville's book Democracy in America presents the tendencies that strengthen the American model of democracy, which does not have to bear the legacy of a feudal past, and the countertendencies that weaken it, from a comparative perspective with Europe and with empirical rigor. Democracy, in line with the principle of equality and popular sovereignty, enables especially the lower classes to participate in governance, thus securing 'the happiness of the greatest number'. In this respect, democracy provides the legitimacy and consent necessary for any kind of political administration based on the social majority. This gives the government a certain stability and predictability. However, democracy also harbors serious risks. Aristocratic society had a fragmented and hierarchical structure in which power was parceled out by different classes. Yet, democracy, in accordance with the principle of equality, reduced all class differences and eliminated privileged social strata. As a result, no limiting social power remained vis-àvis the centralized power. The political landscape took the form of a centralized power and a mass of individuals who became atomized and weakened in the face of it. The masses, which had become politically weak on their own, formed a majority government with their votes, against which there was no barrier. Thus, democratic society became crushed under the weight of its own power.
