ab: The study proposes a systematic analysis of the lexical units that prevail in the sport journalism. The words are conceived by the international media alongside the key elements that define one of the oldest sports – swimming. The approach is an interdisciplinary one, because it offers a cultural, linguistic and semantic perspective. The study aims to exploit a theoretical and a methodological material, exploring the valences of some lexical units found on the internet. The specific terminology of swimming launces the four main strokes: Front Crawl, Backstroke, Butterfly, and Breaststroke. It is a well-known fact that swimming became a flourishing, complex and well-organized sport (cf. Olaru 1988: 22). Thus, the paper establishes a succinct evolution of swimming within the official competitions. The aim is to display a peculiar terminology used nowadays in the aforementioned sphere. In this respect, epithets – captain, alien, phenomenon, locomotive, rocket, king, star, torpilă/ torpedo – hyperbolic collocations – planetary potential – or metaphors – giant shark bite – can be offered as examples given to a Romanian junior swimmer prodigy, David Popovici. These structures were mainly created by the sport journalists. On the one hand, taking into consideration that an oral speech always presents lexical units full of tropes, the paper offers a brief analysis of the written discourse from the online press. On the other, it illustrates the evolution of specialized jargon in swimming, which is promoted to a global level. Memes are a multimodal form of communication that reflect the linguistic identity and the undertake of some sociocultural values promoted by society. These popular, typically humorous types of texts are spread widely online, especially on the social media and they are “commonly associated with the idea of cultural unit” (Taecharungroj, Nueangjamnong 2014, apud Yon 2016: 114). Irony stands at the base of memes, and it is the junction element between sports and memes. For example, Sports Media praises and critiques the athletes depending on their performances, so does a meme. Speaking of David Popovici, his astonishing performances caught the eye of the public. Because of his success, he became the subject of numerous memes. Like a presenter, the online communities had to point out the swimmer’s success by producing amusing content related to his achievements at the age of seventeen. Briefly, journalistic discourse becomes a cliché and it is interpretable from one journalist to another. Nevertheless, this community is not the only one that comments and points an athlete’s persona and performances, but also the online sport memberships, like sport amateurs that create content about the contestants.
