| Sumario: | This introductory chapter provides context to and a framing for this special issue. Building on an interdisciplinary workshop that took place in Poznan, Poland, in early 2023, the articles assembled here examine what we describe as a constitutive ambivalence that has structured Central European experiences of modernity. Bringing together historians, sociologists, art historians and literary scholars, our special issue foregrounds the continuing legacy of (neo)romanticism in shaping contradictory modernities across Central Europe. Through their different historical and geographical foci, our contributing authors illuminate the substantive, conceptual and methodological questions raised by modernity's constitutive contradictions across a range of Central European settings since the end of the 18th century.
