The career and reputation of the composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) is one of the strangest on record, and it deserves a look toward an understanding of why he was so very famous in his day, what happened to that fame, and where he stands today. Sibelius emerged almost full-grown from the mists and forests of Finland before the First World War and was seen by many as a great composer, the inheritor of the mantle of the Germanic Symphony of Quest. It is significant that the young Sibelius contributed to both streams of Germanic music--symphony and tone poem--which, combined with Sibelius' undoubted expertise as constructor of works and a strong sense of the evocation of a spirit beyond the notes themselves, led people to write some great adulatory non-musical epithets to encompass his compositions.
