The Hittites explained the reason for the problems they encountered as an angry god leaving the country/city/temple. In order to avoid this, the first thing to do is to offer sacrifices to the gods, give them food and drink, take care of them (routine procedures/daily rituals) and not to neglect the magnificent, showy holiday rituals accompanied by praise, respect and prayers. The anger in God will lead to many unwanted situations such as disease, epidemic, famine, drought, blood in the house, curse, tears. The Hattian myth of the “Lost God Telipinu” is an example that summarizes this situation. The myth is based on the theme of finding and bringing back the god who disappeared and took with him the abundance, fertility and everything good in the country. God has gone far away because of the pollution. In order for God to return, he must be cleansed of this pollution. Pollution occurs through actions such as “spells, curses, maledictions, foul language, murder, touching the dead, eating contaminated food, making false oaths, angering the gods, etc.”; it leads to various undesirable situations such as “gods leaving the country/city/ temple, various diseases, epidemics, poor harvest, failure of the army, discord within the family, etc.”; and can be eliminated through “purification rituals.” “Rituals of invocation the god” are also “purification/decontaminition rituals” performed to save the lost god from anger and grudge. In the Hittite society, which had thousands of gods, it must have been more acceptable to prevent the god from leaving, rather than making an effort to bring him back, since the vast majority of the documents are aimed at keeping the gods happy.
