Although diagnosis is typically made based on clinical presentation, confirmation is made through biopsy that includes a portion of subcutaneous fat. Erythema nodosum is usually self-limiting, with routine treatment consisting of a conservative approach of supportive measures. Additionally, erythema nodosum is recognized as a cutaneous manifestation of systemic conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease. Dermatology providers should investigate the possibility of underlying inflammatory bowel disease and consider referral to a gastrointestinal specialist when appropriate. Therefore, the purpose of this article was to ensure providers have a thorough understanding of the diagnosis to determine appropriate treatment and identify when critical referrals are warranted.
