Besides the possibility of analysing his anthologies as collections of translations, the selection of the materials also shows his critical preferences. Taking into account that the selection of the works to be included in an anthology is a critical process, Manent's choices obey to a key principle of his poetics, that is, the conception of literature as a creative process which takes part into tradition, benefits from it, and transforms it. The comparative method - especially displayed in his critical writings - was assumed and Manent made it the fulcrum of his critical procedures. Thus, his first published anthology of translations to Catalan Versions de l'anglès (1938) and its second edition retitled El gran vent i les heures (1983) prove the continuity, consistency and coherence of this central aspect of his poetics, remarkably in the representation of imagery. The anthology Poesia anglesa i nordamericana (1955) also echoes recurrent imagery in poems, but Manent's critical participation is more evident in the introductory notes to each author. In these the critic-anthologist offers comparative observations and an implicit defense of the Catholic tradition. Marià Manent, conegut per ésser poeta, traductor, crític, memorialista, també fou antòleg, una vessant generalment ignorada. Les seves antologies, a més de poder ser estudiades com a col·leccions de traduccions, també mostren les preferències del crític quant a la selecció dels materials. Tenint en compte que el triatge de quines obres seran considerades per a formar part de l'antologia és un procés crític, la selecció d'obres en Manent obeeix a un principi clau en la seva poètica, és a saber, la concepció de la literatura com a procés creatiu que participa en la tradició, se'n beneficia i la transforma. El mètode comparatiu que tant valorà en les seves ressenyes l'adoptà i el convertí en l'element clau del seu quefer crític. Així, la primera antologia que publicà de traduccions al català Versions de l'anglès (1938) i la segona edició El gran vent i les heures (1983) atesten la continuïtat, consistència i coherència d'aquest eix central de la seva poètica, especialment en la representació de la imatgeria. L'antologia Poesia anglesa i nord-americana (1955) també es fa ressò de les recurrents imatges en els poemes, però la labor crítica de Manent es fa més palesa en les notes introductòries a cada autor.
