Description
Summary:Objective: To determine the association between maternal anxiety and child behavior in the pediatric dental office. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample consisted of 50 mothers and children who attended a pediatric dental consultation at the Dental Clinic of the Scientific University of the South. The mother's anxiety level was measured by means of the modified Corah dental anxiety scale (SMDA) using a questionnaire that presented a total of 5 questions, of which she had multiple choices, for the child's behavior. The mother signed an informed consent for the use of these instruments, they were told what the research study consisted of and after that all the mothers received a talk on oral hygiene instruction. The Chi-square test was used for the statistical analysis of the variables. Results: The majority of mothers between 24 - 31 years-old presented a mild level of anxiety (34.0%). Most of the children evaluated presented a definitely positive behavior (30.0%), mainly girls. A statistically significant difference was found regarding the association of maternal anxiety and child's behavior during the pediatric dental consultation (p=0.032).. Conclusion: There is an association between maternal anxiety and the child's behavior in the pediatric dental office. In addition, maternal anxiety levels were mild in mothers aged 24-31 years, and the behavior of children aged 6-8 years was definitely positive, especially in girls.
