It is argued that the choice of adjective form is partly determined by the context. Four (nearly) categorical rules are proposed based on the following contextual factors: the form of the copula verb, the presence/absence of a complement, and the nature of the subject of the sentence. At the same time, a "space of competition" is identified, where all three adjective forms are attested. It is hypothesized that within the space of competition, the three forms are recruited to convey different meanings, and it is argued that our analysis lends support to the traditional idea that the short form nominative is closely related to verbs. Our findings are furthermore compatible with the idea that the short form nominative expresses temporary states, rather than inherent permanent characteristics. Аннотация: На основе данных синтаксического подкорпуса Национального корпуса русского языка (НКРЯ) мы проанализировали количественное распределение конкурирующих друг с другом форм русских предикативных прилагательных, а именно прилагательных в творительном падеже (типа пустым), полных прилагательных в именительном падеже (типа пустой) и кратких прилагательных в именительном падеже (типа пуст). Мы пришли к выводу о том, что выбор формы прилагательного частично определяется контекстом. В статье сформулированы четыре закономерности, которые имеют (практически) категорическую природу и базируются на таких контекстуальных факторах, как форма глагола-связки, наличие или отсутствие дополнения и особенности подлежащего в предложении. При этом мы также определили некоторую «зону конкуренции», где засвидетельствованы все три типа форм прилагательных. Мы предполагаем, что в этой зоне указанные формы прилагательных имеют семантические различия и используются для передачи разных значений. Проведенный анализ поддерживает традиционную идею о том, что краткие прилагательные в именительном падеже тесно связаны с глаголами.
