The device was developed and introduced in the mid-seventies and adequate instructions should be given when prescribed. As it has been detected that in occasions the rules are not followed adequately it was decided to investigate the knowledge about the use of the device. Results: More than 97% of the parents/tutors had a written plan given at the outpatient clinic and received instructions/training by the staff. However only 16% demonstrated skills for the proper use of the device; 17% of the devices were expired and 91% of the parents/tutors were not carrying the device at the time of the consultation. Conclusion: most of the parents/tutors do not understand properly the importance of carrying the device; neither know how to use it properly. For these reasons it is important to revisit the training and rules for the correct use of the device, to organize practices in the clinical settings and routinely check the expiration date. These precautions would reduce complications when an anaphylactic episode eventually occurs and lead to less morbidity and lethality. La anafilaxia es una condición aguda severa, por lo que la medicación debe ser administrada precozmente y la precisión en su diagnóstico y tratamiento es fundamental para controlarla. El uso adecuado del Autoinyector de epinefrina (AIE) por las personas al cuidado de menores reviste crucial importancia. Este dispositivo, introducido en el mercado a mediados de la década de los años 70, es ampliamente conocido en la actualidad. Sin embargo, al momento de iniciar su uso es necesario explicar su funcionamiento y entrenar al paciente o a la persona encargada de administrarlo. Al observar el seguimiento inadecuado de las pautas de uso en casos detectados, se decidió investigar el conocimiento de los usuarios sobre el uso del dispositivo. A través de cuestionario se evaluaron detalles sobre el conocimiento y uso del AIE en situación de emergencia. Resultados: más de 97% de los padres/tutores tenían un plan de acción escrito suministrado en consulta, y habían recibido instrucciones sobre el dispositivo por el personal de salud, pero solo 16% sabía aplicarlo correctamente. 17% de los casos tenían el dispositivo caducado y 91% no llevaban el AIE al momento de la consulta. Se concluye que la mayoría de los padres/tutores soslayan la importancia de portar el AIE y conocer la forma de usarlo. Por tanto, es pertinente profundizar el entrenamiento y normas del uso del AIA, efectuar prácticas en consultas y llevar controles sobre su uso y vencimiento.
