| Sumario: | The article "Global History and the Measures of Early Modern Technology: Europe, East Asia, and the Case of Smoothbore Ballistics" explores the differences in the use of muskets between Europe and East Asia in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. While European militaries prioritized speed and convenience, East Asian counterparts emphasized accuracy through rigorous manufacture and user training. This difference did not indicate a fundamental divergence in military capacity but influenced the development of ballistics science in the West. The article highlights the interpretive flexibility of smoothbore ballistics and calls for a reassessment of the role of science in arms development. |
