| Sumario: | This section discusses the portrayal of the Asian mother figure in novels by Asian American women writers. For women writers, the mother figure either cannot be abjected or must be recovered from abjection because the daughter needs to see the mother clearly as a subject in her own right in order to understand her own identity. Writings of women put a greater emphasis on male-female bonds as the basis for immigrants' material survival and success in the immigrant generation. Not only are immigrant women portrayed as central to the survival, success, and continuity of immigrant communities, but their male relatives, especially husbands, figure centrally in these women's immigration narratives.
