ab: The article presents some suggestions for the structural remodeling of worn-out school buildings. Structural remodeling is relatively simple in the all-steel framing systems, but more difficult in the all-reinforced concrete framing systems. Once a school district decides on a program of modernization that includes structural remodeling, it ought to make sure nine factors are considered. The factors are namely, fire resistive ratings, structural deterioration, floor and roof load capacities, structural steel frame, reinforced concrete frame, piles or spread floorings, ground water, lateral bracing and scheduling. Steel frameworks are relatively easy to reinforce, alter and reframe by welding and high strength bolting, but for economy be sure to determine the welding qualities and yield points of the existing steel. Planners should be aware of connection capacities, column base plates and footing capacities, especially when increasing capacities of floors and columns. If the building's basement was designed to withstand hydrostatic uplift pressures and is completely water-proofed, simple remodeling won't be feasible.
