| Sumario: | The article presents information on the subjects of giving homework to the school children. Pupils, parents, teachers and administrators hold a wide range of beliefs and opinions relative to homework. Beliefs and opinions not only differ within and between each of these groups, but they also vary as attention moves along the line from the practical concerns to the deeper philosophical questions which arise whenever problems of homework require attention. Because of the protests of some pupils, an English teacher was questioned about the amount of homework she had assigned. The teacher in question denied vigorously that the required reading of a novel within a period of one week in addition to a strong dose of written work was unreasonable because the reading of a novel was not homework. Although the nature of instruction and the development of sound habits of independent study are important to worthwhile out-of-class study, the assignment is a crucial element in productive homework. Regardless of the nature of the homework assignment, the pupil should clearly understand what he is to do and have definite leads to begin his work.
