This study examines tobacco’s socio-cultural and economic impact on the Ottoman Empire, using the theoretical perspectives of Jason Hughes and Norbert Elias to provide a deeper insight into this historical context. The research investigates its influence on Ottoman society by analysing the introduction and widespread use of tobacco. Through a historical-process analysis, the study uses a wide range of historical documents, including travel books, trade registers and literary works, to trace the evolution of the role of tobacco. The findings show that tobacco was more than just a commodity; it was a transformative force that shaped social identities and strengthened class differences. Tobacco became an indicator of identity within the Ottoman social structure and symbolised unity and rebellion against social standards. The main developments from the 1570s to the beginning of the 20th century are highlighted, showing how tobacco growing and trade revolutionised agricultural practices and integrated centralised control through the Régie Company and the Ottoman economy into the world market. Culturally, the widespread acquisition of tobacco, particularly in coffee houses, has facilitated the creation of shared spaces and played a crucial role in social interaction. Smoking practices became markers of social distinction, reflection and strengthening of class structures. Applying Hughes and Elias provides a nuanced analysis of the historical evolution of tobacco production and consumption in the Ottoman Empire with insights into how tobacco consumption was interwoven with broader social dynamics.
