La novela corta de José Donoso, Naturaleza muerta con cachimba (1990), puede ser considerada como un simulacro pictórico. La brevedad del relato y el limitado conocimiento sobre arte del personaje narrador –cuyo testimonio corresponde a la totalidad de la novela– son análogos a las características de la naturaleza muerta que históricamente ha sido posicionada como género pictórico menor.
