| Sumario: | This article discusses the role of computers in high school social studies. computers into their teaching: Computers have not historically belonged to the social studies program; teaching programming was thought to be the best use of computers for instruction; there was a limited variety of social studies software; and social studies was not often the focus of in-service education on computers. Nonetheless, social studies teachers have been slow to respond to using computers. Information on school usage is reason to think so. A recent analysis of 51 studies found that, in more than 80 percent of the studies reviewed, students involved in computer-based programs outscored the students in control groups. In social studies, where teachers often complain about an already overcrowded curriculum, the prospect of making teaching more efficient is attractive. The analysis cited earlier also reports that student attitudes toward the subject matter may be enhanced through computer-assisted instruction.
