Learning through both wreading and traveling allows a person to discover new worlds, dream, and influences their literary life. Since the age of geographical discoveries, lands with different cultures and resources have become a desire for exploration for the West. It can be said that this desire later became the initiator of the West's Orientalist discourse. With the advancement of transportation, technology, and industry, the widespread travel to Eastern lands paved the way for more frequent Western visits to the East. Works related to travel literature, such as fictional and non-fictional travelogues, science fiction novels, interplanetary journeys, exploration expeditions, and travel notes published in periodicals, became increasingly prevalent in 19th-century Western literature and Turkish literature. In 19th-century Turkish literature, Ahmet İhsan, the founder of the magazine Servet-i Fünûn, was an important writer, publisher, and traveller. During his six-week journey on the Nile River in 1896, Ahmet İhsan described his expectations, curiosities, feelings, observations, and impressions of both ancient Egypt and the modernising Egypt of the 19th century from the perspective of a Westernized Turkish traveller. This article focuses on Ahmet İhsan's passion for travel and his journey along the Nile River, a subject of Orientalist research. It examines how Egypt, which had become a subject of curiosity and interest for Europe since the 18th century and gradually transformed into a field of study, was perceived by the modern Turkish intellectual Ahmet İhsan. Seyahat etmek, merak etmeyi, keşfetmeyi ve öğrenme isteğini tatmin etmek için akla gelen ilk eylemdir. Hem okuyarak hem de gezerek öğrenmek insanın yeni dünyaları tanımasını, hayal kurmasını ve yazınsal hayatını etkileyen noktalardır. Coğrafi keşiflerden itibaren farklı kültürlerin ve kaynakların olduğu coğrafyalar, Batı için bir görme ve keşfetme arzusu haline gelir. Bu arzu daha sonrasında Batı’nın Oryantalist söylemlerinin başlatıcısıdır denilebilir. Ulaşım imkânları, teknoloji ve sanayinin gelişimiyle beraber Doğu coğrafyalarına seyahatin yaygınlaşması Batı’nın Doğu’ya daha çok seyahat etmesinin de önünü açar. Kurmaca ve gerçek seyahatnameler, bilimkurgu türündeki romanlar, gezegenler arasında yolculuklar, keşif yolculukları, süreli yayınlarda yayınlanan gezi notları gibi gezi edebiyatıyla ilgili eserlerin, 19. yüzyıl Batı edebiyatında ve Türk edebiyatında giderek arttığı görülür. 19. yüzyıl Türk edebiyatında Servet-i Fünûn dergisinin kurucusu Ahmet İhsan bu noktada önemli bir yazar, yayıncı ve gezgindir. 1896 yılında altı hafta süren Nil nehri seyahatinde, Ahmet İhsan hem antik Mısır’a hem 19. yüzyılın modernleşen Mısır’ına ilişkin beklentilerini, meraklarını, duygularını, gözlem ve izlenimlerini Batılı bir Türk gezgin gözünden anlatır.
