      ab: This article focuses on the distinction between task and method variables in meaningful learning and retention. Task variables is those characteristics of learning tasks which are predicted to produce positive transfer to related tasks whereas method variables is characteristics of learning experiences which are predicted to improve the efficiency of learning as measured by the criteria of more rapid acquisition or greater retention. The concept of component task analysis presupposes that, since most human learning tasks are complex, it can be subdivided into a series of tasks. A task analysis is a behavioral description of what the learner must be able to do with respect to each of the subtasks.
