      ab: This article is concerned with on-line use of computers by students to further individual learning, by teachers to supervise instruction, by authors to prepare self-instructional material or learning exercises and by researchers to study the optimization of learning. Typically the users converse with the computer through direct connection of electric typewriters, film projectors, audio devices, electronic display screens and pointers. For many students the control imposed by an author through a computer delivered sequence is not necessary if the learning materials are well organized. The sever requirements of detailed instructional programming discourage the assembly and revision of major portions of curriculum in this elaborate format. The increasing use of computers and electronic technology and an emphasis on skills of information acquisition and decision making recommend giving students more control over the learning environment.
