| Sumario: | This study explores the experiences, perceptions, and barriers faced by older adults with intellectual disabilities in using technology. Using a qualitative approach with semi- structured interviews (n = 108), the research identified five central themes: barriers to access and usability, impact on autonomy and well-being, need for support and training, preferences and desired adaptations in technology, and the influence of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality. Participants highlighted the challenges posed by complex interfaces, cognitive limitations, and physical accessibility issues, while also emphasizing the empowering role of technology in fostering independence, emotional well- being, and social connections. The role of caregivers emerged as critical, not only as facilitators of technological adoption but also as emotional anchors, reinforcing confidence in using these tools. Participants expressed a strong preference for user-centered designs that include visual guides, automatic reminders, and customizable features to improve accessibility and autonomy. Advanced technologies offered innovative opportunities but were hindered by cost, usability challenges, and the need for ergonomic adaptations. The findings underscore the need for inclusive policies, targeted training for caregivers, and the development of adaptive, accessible devices tailored to the needs of this population. This study provides actionable insights for improving technological accessibility and fostering greater inclusion, autonomy, and quality of life for older adults with intellectual disabilities. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Promoting inclusive design: The findings highlight the necessity of developing assistive technologies that prioritize user-centered design. This includes simplified interfaces, visual aids, and customizable features tailored to the specific cognitive and physical needs of older adults with intellectual disabilities. By reducing complexity and enhancing accessibility, these adaptations can significantly improve independence and self-efficacy, allowing users to interact with technology more confidently and effectively. Strengthening caregiver support: Caregivers are central to the successful adoption and consistent use of technology. They provide not only technical guidance but also emotional encouragement, which helps reduce anxiety and foster a positive attitude toward learning. Implementing caregiver-specific training programs can enhance their ability to mediate technological use, making them more effective in supporting older adults. Such programs should focus on both operational skills and strategies for empowering users to explore and adapt to new technologies independently. Integrating advanced technologies: Emerging tools such as artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) offer innovative opportunities for rehabilitation. AI-powered systems, including virtual assistants and health monitoring devices, can provide real-time personalization and reminders, fostering greater independence in daily tasks. Similarly, VR offers safe, simulated environments for practicing life skills and reducing anxiety. However, ensuring cognitive and ergonomic adaptations in these technologies is crucial to maximize their usability and benefit. Targeted training interventions: Effective technology use requires tailored training programs that are structured, repetitive, and gradual. Training should be delivered at a pace appropriate for users, incorporating step-by-step guidance and visual aids. These interventions should also include follow-up sessions to reinforce learning and address any emerging challenges. By emphasizing skill-building and familiarity, training programs can help users retain knowledge and maintain consistent use of technological tools. Addressing accessibility barriers: Economic barriers, such as the high cost of advanced technologies, often limit their adoption among vulnerable populations. Advocacy for public policies that promote affordability through subsidies, funding initiatives, and public-private partnerships is essential. Additionally, ensuring equitable distribution of these technologies, particularly in rural areas, is critical for closing the digital divide and enhancing accessibility for older adults with intellectual disabilities. Fostering long-term engagement: To sustain the benefits of technology in rehabilitation, it is necessary to design devices and programs that encourage continuous use. Features such as automatic reminders, progress tracking, and adaptive interfaces can motivate users to integrate technology into their daily routines. Long-term engagement can also be supported by involving users in the design process, ensuring that their preferences and needs are directly addressed. Promoting inclusive policies and education: Policymakers should prioritize the development of inclusive frameworks that integrate assistive technologies into rehabilitation and daily living programs. Additionally, community-based education initiatives can increase awareness and understanding of the potential of technology to enhance quality of life for older adults with intellectual disabilities. These efforts should also include training for professionals and service providers to ensure comprehensive support.
