METHOLOGY: A literature review was conducted using the PICO methodology in three article databases related to uterine tamponade. These databases included controlled clinical trials, cohort studies, observational studies, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and narrative reviews published from 2019 to the present. Selection was carried out in two phases: first, based on titles and abstracts; second, based on full articles and the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. RESULTS: A total of 297 articles were identified. After applying the Physiotherapy Evidence Database's selection and evaluation criteria, 24 articles with six or more points remained for review. CONCLUSIONS: Tamponade mechanisms are a secondary treatment option for patients with postpartum hemorrhage, particularly those with uterine atony. This is an important strategy when pharmacological treatment is ineffective. Uterine tamponade reduces or inhibits uterine bleeding related to postpartum hemorrhage due to atony. Tamponade using a vacuum system most closely resembles the physiological response of uterine contraction. OBJETIVO: Describir las opciones de taponamiento uterino para tratar la atonía uterina. METODOLOGÍA: Revisión bibliográfica, con la metodología PICO, en tres bases de datos de artículos relacionados con el taponamiento uterino, que incluyó ensayos clínicos controlados, estudios de cohorte, observacionales, metanálisis, revisiones sistemáticas y narrativas, publicados de 2019 a la fecha. La selección se efectuó en dos fases: la primera por título y resumen, y la segunda con artículo completo y la escala Physioterapy Evidence Database. RESULTADOS: Se localizaron 297 artículos; luego de aplicar los criterios de selección y evaluación de Physioterapy Evidence Database, quedaron 24 para la revisión con 6 puntos o más. CONCLUSIONES: Los mecanismos de taponamiento son la segunda línea de tratamiento de pacientes con hemorragia posparto, sobre todo por atonía uterina, lo que representa una estrategia importante cuando el tratamiento farmacológico no es efectivo. El taponamiento uterino es una opción que disminuye o cohíbe el sangrado uterino relacionado con la hemorragia posparto por atonía.
