In prehistoric cultures where writing had not yet been used, visual signs enriched through shared cultural memory and make sense with numerous meanings adorned the surfaces of various objects. Among these examples, pottery constitutes an important group of finds in which cultural signs were used as elements of communication. Characterizing the Early Bronze Age of the Eastern Anatolia Region the Kura-Araxes, referred to locally as Karaz Culture possesses a ceramic tradition that distinctly differs from its contemporaries with its unique style. These ceramics, hand-shaped and featuring a red-black color contrast, show standard technical characteristics; however, it is known that local environmental conditions influenced certain technical practices--such as clay, additive and motifs--on a regional level. The decorative repertoire of this ceramic tradition, which constitutes an original artistic language, includes designs composed of various geometric and figurative motifs. In addition, the fact that these compositions were used repeatedly in different cultural regions make think that they contain a cultural message. This article presents a semiotic analysis of the decorative composition on the Güzelova pot, which holds a special place within the Kura-Aras ceramic decoration repertoire of the Erzurum region. For each motif forming the design, descriptive and then analyses at thematic level have been conducted, and the motifs have been interpreted within their cultural context to reveal the possible meanings represented by the composition.
