ab: This is a cross-sectional study investigating the relation between positive mental health and problematic internet use (PIU) in adolescents. Data were collected between February and June 2024 at three middle schools and three high schools in Antalya, Turkey. The stratified sampling method was used in the research, and the study included 380 adolescents (aged 11 to 17 years). In data analysis, descriptive statistical methods, Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used. The adolescents had an average score of 63.21 (SD = 16.08) on the Problematic Internet Use Scale – Adolescent Form and 117.35 (SD = 14.97) on the Positive Mental Health Scale. There was a medium negative correlation between their positive mental health and their PIU (r = −0.48, p < 0.001). Male gender (β = 0.13, p < 0.01), parents being divorced (β = 0.10, p < 0.05), having non-internet activities (β = −0.09, p < 0.05), duration of daily internet use (β = 0.33, p < 0.001), the positive mental health sub-dimensions of self-control (β = −0.26, p < 0.001), autonomy (β = −0.14, p < 0.01) and personal satisfaction (β = −0.11, p < 0.05) were significant predictors of PIU. The variables explained 41.2 % of PIU variance. The results show that self-control, personal satisfaction, and autonomy may be associated with PIU in adolescents. Based on these associations, possible nursing interventions could include supporting adolescents in developing their self-control skills, enhancing their autonomy, strengthening their self-esteem, and helping them gain better self-awareness. • Exploring the link between positive mental health and problematic internet use (PIU) in adolescents is key for prevention. • Positive mental health and PIU are at a medium level in adolescents. • Self-control, autonomy and personal satisfaction are predictors of PIU. • Adolescents with long daily internet use, male gender, divorced parents, and no non-internet activities show higher PIU.
