The objective is to explore the linguistic phenomenon of "adjacency" and analyze its effect on both syntactic and morphological levels, highlighting its pervasive role across various aspects of grammar and morphology, while providing practical examples to illustrate its different forms and types. The main issue addressed in the study revolves around how the proximity of a word or its syntactic position may alter its grammatical structure (such as case marking, or the addition of superfluous prepositions) or its morphological structure (such as substitution, omission, or addition), and whether adjacency is considered a cause in itself, or an effect resulting from another underlying cause. The methodology employed is a descriptive-analytical approach, wherein the study describes linguistic phenomena attributed to adjacency in classical works of grammar, tafsir (exegesis), and Quranic readings, and analyzes them to elucidate the true impact of adjacency in these contexts. The findings of the study indicate that adjacency in grammatical parsing (subordination to position) is one of the most prominent manifestations of proximity, particularly in cases of erroneous case marking (false genitive) or genitive by adjacency. This subordination is not a generalizable rule, but rather a phenomenon that is based on auditory perception, dependent on context and the specific reading. The impact of adjacency on morphology is strongly evident in processes of phonological weakening and substitution, where the phonetic effect serves the purpose of verbal simplification. This effect is particularly noticeable in non-standard Quranic readings, where certain case markings or letters result from a perceived adjacency or a tendency toward adjacent words. This study distinguishes between direct adjacency, where one word directly affects the word that follows, and indirect adjacency, where the effect stems from the syntactic position rather than the word itself. The study recommends a clear differentiation between cases of auditory adjacency, which are not subject to generalization, and phonetic morphological simplifications, which result from adjacency but are governed by systematic phonological rules. It also advocates for a deeper incorporation of the concept of adjacency into grammar curricula as a long-standing linguistic phenomenon with its historical roots.
