ab: Governmental authorities often establish consultative committees to provide critical advice on heritage policy formulation. In these committees, the role of the Chair is critical, affecting the direction of a heritage policy and its outcome. Despite the significance of the Chair's role, it has so far received limited systematic attention in heritage scholarship. This article addresses this gap by examining two key research questions: What are the tasks of the Chairpersons in these committees? Which features condition the Chairs' performance in executing their main tasks? Drawing on interviews with members of three consultative committees in Greece, we analyse the role of the Chair in these committees and generalize about the tasks of the Chairs and the parameters that condition his/her performance.
