Intended to serve as a reader's guide to Guy Debord's early years and his first movement-related publications, it delves into the historical context and the subversive atmosphere of the après-guerre Saint- Germain-des-Prés, the then-center of bohemia. Presenting the avant-garde polemics of the time the preface revisits Debord's little-studied Lettrist period and introduces the translation of his earliest writings on cinema as decisive precursors to Situationist practices. Debord's Lettrist apprenticeship emerged as both formative and antagonistic. Influenced by his first mentor and adversary, Isidore Isou, leader of the Lettrist Movement, Debord's early writings in the magazine ION (1952) oscillate between youthful poeticism and militant negation, marking the passage from Lettrist disciple to usurper and renegade.
