Description
Summary:In this study, based on the Kültepe texts from the Old Assyrian Trade Colony Period, which are the oldest written documents of Anatolia, the concept of blood, an important cultural element in Anatolian and Mesopotamian societies, is comprehensively analysed. The word damum (blood), which appears in the Kültepe texts, is mostly used in abstract senses. The term generally refers to "murder" and the "blood Money" paid to the relative of the murdered person, while expressions such as "blood house" and "blood oath" can also be evaluated in this context. It is also used in the sense of "lineage, gene," and possibly "revenge." The concept rarely appears in magical duplications, and occasionally refers to the colour red and tree sap. In the article, detailed analyses of the concept damum, which is used in different contexts and with various meanings in the Kültepe tablets, will be conducted with examples from the texts, focusing on its semantic and cultural scope and its reflections on the present day. Its reflections will be discussed within the scope of Anatolian and Turkish culture. In addition, the epigraphic analysis of two Kültepe tablets related to the concept of blood, one previously unpublished and the other partially published, will be included.
