Sketching remains essential to the design process by supporting idea generation and reflective dialogue between the designer and emerging forms. As digital technologies become more deeply integrated into architectural education and professional practice, the sketching process is undergoing a notable transformation in both representational and pedagogical approaches. This transformation is reflected in the changing qualities of design tools and in the emergence of diverse digital environments that assume distinct functions across stages such as ideation, development, and presentation. While digital sketching tools offer advantages such as portability, editing flexibility, and visual precision, they often replicate traditional sketching through static interfaces—typically confined to a single drawing canvas. This static structure, although functional, may limit iterative exploration and constrain creative thinking in the early stages of design. This study explores the potential of Animation-Based Digital Sketching (ADS) as an alternative approach that more closely aligns with the dynamic and iterative nature of the early design stage. An experimental workshop involving ten undergraduate architecture students was conducted as a data collection method. Ethical approval for this study was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Yıldız Technical University (Report No: 20240602989, dated 03.06.2024). All participants took part in two separate design sessions using Static Digital Sketching (SDS) and Animation-Based Digital Sketching (ADS). A total of 346 sketches were analyzed using content analysis guided by a structured coding scheme encompassing Routine Drawing (RD), Non-Routine Design Decision (NRDD), and Reframing Design Problem (RDP). The findings demonstrate that ADS applications not only led to a greater quantity of sketches but also showed a tendency to support creative design activity. It was observed that the ability to easily review previously generated sketches through the timeline feature facilitated cognitive fluidity and iterative thinking. These results suggest that integrating the ADS approach into architectural design education may enhance students’ creative engagement and expand the representational affordances of digital sketching environments.
