To do so, I analyze about 40 letters exchanged between Raul Moreira Léllis and various actors of the Companhia Editora Nacional. In the 1960s, Léllis achieved great success with Português no colégio, solidified in the discipline's memory as a representative of traditional Portuguese teaching. Correspondence between the author and publishers, as well as among the publishers themselves, documents negotiations to reintroduce a previously successful publication, through adaptations, into the emerging school market of the 1970s. These attempts were however unsuccessful. My aim is to trace the itinerary of the failure of a textbook that, for a long time, was considered a success and simultaneously propose, in the field of applied linguistics, a reflection on the role of history as a discipline and historicity as a social phenomenon. As a theoretical-methodological framework, I adopt a discursive approach that acknowledges the materiality of society and history in language and meaning. The results show that even during periods of high print runs, Português no colégio was a failure in success because, tethered to conservative programs, it demonstrated a mismatch between knowledge, content, methods, and new school clienteles. If it achieved significant print runs, it was because there was a growing number of students and because it was published by a company with significant technicalcommercial capacity. The success in failure and the doomed attempts at reformulation had different outcomes because they insisted on updating the same arrangement of knowledge, content, and methods that were becoming exhausted, but in distinct socio-historical circumstances. Investigo como, nos arranjos entre instâncias oficiais, comerciais, editoriais e autorais, ocorreram mudanças e permanências na disciplina escolar português. Para tanto, analiso aproximadamente 40 cartas trocadas entre Raul Moreira Léllis e diferentes atores da Companhia Editora Nacional. Nos anos 1960, Léllis obteve grande sucesso com Português no colégio, cristalizado, na memória da disciplina, como representante do ensino tradicional de português. A correspondência entre autor e editores e entre os próprios editores registra as negociações para a reinserção do antigo sucesso editorial, com adaptações, em um novo mercado escolar, nos anos 1970. Essas tentativas foram, contudo, malfadadas. Meu objetivo é, portanto, retraçar o itinerário do fracasso de um livro que, durante longo tempo, foi considerado um sucesso e, simultaneamente, propor, em linguística aplicada, uma reflexão sobre o papel da história como disciplina e da historicidade como fenômeno social. Como arcabouço teórico-metodológico, adoto uma abordagem discursiva que reconhece, na língua e no sentido, a materialidade da sociedade e da história. Os resultados mostram que, mesmo no período de grandes tiragens, Português no colégio foi um fracasso no sucesso, pois, apegado a programas conservadores, manifestava um desencontro entre saberes, conteúdos e métodos e novas clientelas escolares. Se obteve tiragens expressivas, foi porque havia um número crescente de alunos e porque era publicado por uma editora com importante capacidade técnico-comercial.
