Despite its relevance, the work was silenced after its publication, disappearing from bookshelves and public discourse for decades. However, in 2024, forty-six years later, the text was republished in France and Senegal, a double appearance that has allowed Thiam to be recognised not only as an essential literary figure, but also as a cornerstone in contemporary movements in defence of women's rights in Africa and its diaspora. Today, her work is considered a key text in the Francophone literary landscape and the foundational essay of African feminisms. En 1978, Awa Thiam, antropóloga y activista política senegalesa, escribió La parole aux négresses, un ensayo con el que denunció, de forma pionera, la mutilación genital femenina y otras formas de violencia sufridas por las mujeres negro-africanas, como el blanqueamiento de la piel o la poligamia. A pesar de su relevancia, la obra fue silenciada tras su publicación, desapareciendo de las estanterías y del discurso público durante décadas. Sin embargo, en 2024, cuarenta y seis años más tarde, el texto fue reeditado en Francia y Senegal, una doble aparición que ha permitido reconocer a Thiam no solo como una figura literaria esencial, sino también como una piedra angular en los movimientos contemporáneos en defensa de los derechos de las mujeres en África y su diáspora.
