| Summary: | The seventeenth-century Spanish dramatist Álvaro Cubillo de Aragón, born in Almagro, was active as a dramatist in the 1630's and 1640's. Writing for the Madrid corrales de comedias while based in Andalusia, Cubillo became a well-known figure in the capital. Juan Pérez de Montalbán, celebrating the literary luminaries of his time in his 1632 Para todos , observed that: "Álvaro Cubillo, bizarro poeta, hace excelentes comedias. ..." (fol. 357). This study analyzes Dionisia, the androgynous protagonist who chooses the name "Añasco el de Talavera", as a monster as that term was understood in the Early Modern period.
