But Random House Inc. and HarperCollins Publishers Ltd. has recently abandoned caution with serious investments in transatlantic television and film ventures. Last month HarperCollins took the rare step of investing in a £4m production to bring a book character--Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe--back to the screen. Then Random House went one better, embarking on a 50/50 creative and strategic partnership with film production company Focus Features.
