Epigramists during that period used that language of repentance and conversion as they adopted religious subject matter. The religious use of the epigram faced challenges from the genre's brevity. An epigram directs attention to the object or incident under consideration. English epigramists made frequent reference to metaphors and defended their poems by distinguishing them from other varieties. Epigramists invoked authoritative precedents and models as part of their defense. |
