His work Didascalicon, in addition to synthesizing the achievements of major authors from previous centuries such as Augustine, Boethius, Cassiodorus, and Isidore, became a foundational text later used by authors of the thirteenth century -- when a completely new educational institution emerged in Europe namely the university. This is attested by various introductions to the philosophical sciences from the first half of the thirteenth century. The influence of the Victorine can be observed both in On the Reduction of the Arts to Theology by the Franciscan thinker Bonaventure and in On the Origin of the Sciences by his contemporary Robert Kilwardby. Moreover, the views on philosophy, didactics, and the general aims of pedagogy presented by Hugh of Saint Victor in the Didascalicon could serve as a guide for us today in the ongoing debates within Bulgarian society concerning the place of religious education in schools.
