| Sumario: | The anthology *Fantasy Aesthetics. Visualizing Myth and Middle Ages, 1880–2020*, edited by Hans Rudolf Velten and Joseph Imorde, investigates interdisciplinarily the visualization of the Middle Ages in the context of fantasy aesthetics, with a particular focus on illustrations of historicizing fantasy novels. The volume presents a strongly Euro-North American perspective, concentrating on a few authors such as Tolkien, and neglects other visual media like comics, films, or games, which is criticized as a thematic limitation. Furthermore, a clear definition of terms such as (neo-)medieval is missing, which impairs the analytical precision. However, individual contributions—for example, on the historical development of elf visualization or on the cartography of fictional worlds—offer convincing cultural-historical contextualizations and demonstrate the potential for further interdisciplinary research in this field. Review of Fantasy Aesthetics. Visualizing Myth and Middle Ages, 1880–2020 edited by Hans Rudolf and Joseph Imorde. |
