Sumario:This article systematically explores the philosophical dimensions of supersymmetry (SUSY), a theoretical framework in particle physics positing a symmetry between bosons (force-carrying particles) and fermions (matter particles). It traces SUSY’s conceptual development from its origins in the early 1970s through its integration with quantum gravity and string theory, highlighting its empirical motivations and challenges, especially in light of null results from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The article identifies key metaphysical, epistemological, and methodological questions raised by SUSY, such as the ontological status of particles and spacetime, the interpretation of symmetry principles, and the assessment of scientific evidence and theory pursuit. It also introduces a collection of papers addressing these issues, including discussions on emergence, the spin-statistics theorem, substantivalism about superspace, Bayesian confirmation models for SUSY, and the justification for continuing SUSY research despite limited empirical support.
