BACKGROUND: Burns result in tissue destruction due to energy transfer, the various causes can trigger different physiological and pathophysiological responses in the human body. Approximately 85% of all burns are thermal injuries, and are complex because of their functional, esthetic and emotional impact. In recent years, adipose tissue therapy has shown great potential for tissue regeneration. Based on this, cell therapy using adult mesenchymal stem cells has emerged as a therapeutic option. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the healing potential of adipose tissue in the repair and regeneration of tissues affected by thermal burns, exploring its mechanism of action, clinical benefits, and limitations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A structured review was conducted on the use of adipose tissue in thermal burns; by using MeSH and DeCS terms a bibliographic search was done in PubMed, Cochrane, ScienceDirect, and SciELO. RESULTS: After three phases of selection and evaluation using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist, five relevant and scientifically sound studies were included. Most investigations reported improvements in tissue regeneration and wound healing in patients with thermal burns treated with autologous adipose tissue. Furthermore, good treatment tolerance was observed, with no serious adverse events reported. CONCLUSIONS: Adipose tissue therapy shows clinical potential as a complementary strategy in the repair of thermal burn injuries.
