ab: This sociological reflection explores the symbolic and aesthetic representation of social identity through a singular dimension: personal image, understood as the configuration of bodily attributes, clothing, and ornamentation. These elements operate as carriers of a broad repertoire of aesthetic-symbolic signs and meanings that enable the recognition and differentiation of social identities. The visual expression of social identity, anchored in corporeality, requires a specific analytical designation: visual identity. This concept refers to the ways in which bodily aesthetic codes communicate and condense social and identity-related meanings. Within the sphere of social interaction, visual identities emerge with hegemonic, dissident, or stigmatized characteristics, shaping the dynamics of inclusion, exclusion, and confrontation.
