This novel is a historical novel. Schaukal's literary development shows some similarity to that of some of his contemporaries. Reference to his early poetic works is also made in the article. The author says that such a writer can be easily dismissed as an epigone. The plot of the novel is given which shows a very modern, atmosphere of half-colors, unreal feelings and half-hearted emotions. Schaukal has also used adjectives and epithets at the beginning of the story. The story of the novel is a combination of elements borrowed from various sources. Concerning the characters in the novel, with physical, existential reality, a point of seriousness seems finally to have been reached. A comparison of the "Eros" is made with dramatist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's novel "Wahlverwandtschaften." It is concluded that in the book "Eros," Schaukal does not only show epigonality, but he has revealed himself as an author who was well able to play skillfully on the fashionable registers of his time. pubtype: Academic Journal doctype: Literary Criticism src: R language: English refInfo: copyright: @attributes: flag: Y custom: Copyright of Modern Austrian Literature is the property of Modern Austrian Literature and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites without the copyright holder's express written permission.
