ab: In the aftermath of COVID-19's devastating impact on families and businesses, and the resurgence of interest in Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), the pivotal role of community leadership in building resilience and fostering economic recovery is increasingly evident. This study explores the features of two successful community leadership programs using an ABCD lens. These programs strive to empower communities to utilize local assets to overcome challenges. Data from 41 in-depth interviews with program graduates and facilitators were analyzed using thematic analysis, focusing on their experiences and professional growth. The findings suggest that community leadership development programs significantly enhance participants' leadership skills, community awareness, networking abilities, and provide practical experiences, aligning with key success factors for impactful community leadership. Participants reported transformative experiences that equipped them for diverse roles across sectors, highlighting the programs' role in fostering a deep understanding of community dynamics, expanding professional networks, and enabling practical applications of learned skills in real-world scenarios. Community leadership development programs that emphasize the development of local human capital and connection with local resources and opportunities can be transformative. They enhance community engagement and leadership skills, and underscore the effectiveness of people-and-place-centered programs in cultivating resilient and impactful community leaders.
