Revisiting an old research site, Macclesfield in north-west England, we encountered marked shifts in the local meanings of disorder that seem to have developed since we were last there in the mid-1990s. Residents described 'chronic harms' that focussed on various forms of 'litter' (e.g. drugs detritus, abandoned buildings, potholes) and the detrimental effects of local development (e.g. traffic congestion, air pollution, damage to the natural environment). We show how these harms matter because they are entangled with people's sense of the liveability and sustainability of the places they care about and inhabit.
