As front-line clinical staff, advanced practice providers (APPs) are well-poised to identify issues that directly impact patient care and outcomes. Seeing an opportunity to lead departmental initiatives, a team of TCVS APPs approached and gained buy-in from leadership to form an APP-led EBP/QI committee. Purpose: A team of APPs in the TCVS department sought to establish an APP-led EBP/QI committee, focused on promoting quality assurance, patient safety, and process efficiency through the use of EBP. Interventions: During the formation of the committee, the members drafted a charter outlining key goals, objectives, and guidelines for the committee. Goals included reviewing and collaborating on up to two major projects per year, maintaining a registry of all EBP/QI initiatives within the department, and communicating project updates at departmental meetings. Committee membership comprised of TCVS APPs, with an elected chair. The committee also created a pathway for ongoing collaboration with the department's quality officer and a faculty advisor. All committee members completed designated QI training. The committee created an intake form to allow department faculty and staff to submit project ideas to be reviewed as possible initiatives. The committee scheduled monthly meetings to discuss ongoing and new projects. Results: Since its formation in fiscal year 2022, the TCVS APP-led EBP/ QI committee has been able to pursue multiple projects relevant to oncology patients undergoing thoracic surgery. These have included the standardization of venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, evaluation of the role of iron-deficiency anemia in the need for perioperative blood transfusions, assessment of the need for routine post-pull chest x-rays after chest tube removal, and implementation of a perioperative oral care regimen to reduce the risk for post-operative infections. These projects have directly impacted clinical practices within the department to align with best practice guidelines. The committee has been able to disseminate their work at an institutional and national level. Discussion: This committee represents a reproducible model for the delivery of APP-led EBP/QI initiatives by leveraging DNP-prepared nurse practitioners committed to the delivery of safe and effective care.
