| Sumario: | The article reports on the three characteristics of writing quality namely the opinionation, vagueness, and specificity-distinctions. These traits were chosen on the assumption that single words mark the presence of characteristics in essays. A set of graded essays was searched by computer for evaluation, and the measures obtained were correlated with the essay grades. The attempt to grade essays by computer seemed to many psychologists to be distinctly premature. Little was known of the cognitive processes of essay graders. Student essay characteristics especially influential among graders were seemingly too few and too impotent to engender optimism.
