Sumario:The article examines the "church newspaper question" in the Diocese of Münster between 1934 and 1938 as a regional political issue in the context of the church struggle between the Diocese of Münster and the Nazi regime. The focus is on the conflict between Catholic church newspaper publishers, especially Wilhelm Bitter (Recklinghausen) and Josef Vienerius (Rheine), who competed over distribution areas despite increasing state control and ecclesiastical directives. Bishop Clemens August von Galen attempted to assert the church's interests against the publishers' economic self-interests but often failed due to their resistance and the pressure from the Nazi regime, which from 1936 increasingly controlled the church newspapers and authoritatively established a reorganization of the districts in 1937/38. The "Schülle case" in 1937, a morality proceeding instrumentalized by Nazi propaganda, led to repression against the Catholic press, whereby Vienerius regained his newspaper through the publication of the official government notice of conditions but was regarded as a "black sheep." Despite multiple attempts to resolve the church newspaper question, the conflicts between publishers and state interference persisted until the ban on all church newspapers in 1941. After the war, the remaining publishers, without Vienerius, continued the reorganization of the church newspaper districts and founded a unified church newspaper.
