        Purpose: To examine the feasibility, test–retest reliability, and validity of the Timed Functional Arm and Shoulder Test (TFAST) with individuals with PD. Method: Twenty-six participants with PD were examined using TFAST; Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH); and Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) Motor subscale. TFAST was readministered 2–7 days after baseline. Correlation analysis examined relationships between the measures. Participants' TFAST scores were compared with those of asymptomatic older adults. Results: Of participants, 96.2% completed TFAST. Reliability was characterized by an intra-class correlation coefficient (2,1) of 0.93 (95% CI: 0.84, 0.97). TFAST and UPDRS correlated weakly (r = −0.19, 95% CI: −0.55, 0.22) and TFAST and DASH (r = −0.36, 95% CI: −0.66, 0.04), and UPDRS and DASH (r = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.72) correlated moderately. Participants with PD had lower TFAST scores than older adults (mean difference 18.8, 95% CI: 6.0, 31.6, p = 0.005). Conclusions: TFAST appears feasible and highly reliable with people with PD. Moderate correlations between the measures suggest each provides unique insight into disability. TFAST scores of people with PD were significantly lower than those of asymptomatic older adults with less upper extremity disability. Lay Summary: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder associated with physical dysfunction. Physical rehabilitation of those with PD is commonly sought and relies on effective assessment and identification of deficits. However, the currently recommended assessments for those with PD are not comprehensive because they prioritize small and precise motion assessment of the hands and wrist, likely because PD is well-known to cause difficulty with hand use because of tremors. We believe that our study illustrates a new application of an assessment, the Timed Functional Arm and Shoulder Test (TFAST), that will help physical rehabilitation providers more comprehensively identify arm problems and track progress during rehabilitation. The TFAST reliably provides an objective and quantitative assessment of performance relating to large and forceful motions of the upper extremity. This is an important aspect of assessment because regions of the arm, such as the shoulder, are also frequently affected by PD. The results of our study suggest that the TFAST is moderately related to the current gold-standard assessment tool but also provides slightly more additional information that we believe will lead to more targeted and effective physical rehabilitation treatments.
        Résumé: Objectif : examiner la faisabilité, la fiabilité test–retest et la validité du test de performance fonctionnelle du bras et de l'épaule (TFAST) chez des personnes atteintes de la maladie de Parkinson (MP). Méthodologie : au total, 26 participants atteints de la MP ont subi un examen à l'aide du TFAST, ont répondu au questionnaire sur la gêne occasionnée par l'épaule, le bras et la main (DASH) et ont rempli la sous-échelle motrice de l'échelle d'évaluation unifiée de la MP (UPDRS) produite par la Movement Disorder Society. Le TFAST a été repris de deux à sept jours après le test de référence. Les auteurs ont examiné le lien entre les mesures au moyen d'une analyse de corrélation. Ils ont comparé les scores du TFAST des participants à ceux de personnes âgées asymptomatiques. Résultats : sur l'ensemble des participants, 96,2 % ont terminé le TFAST. La fiabilité était caractérisée par un coefficient de corrélation intraclasse (2,1) de 0,93 (IC à 95 % : 0,84, 0,97). Le TFAST et l'UPDRS avaient une faible corrélation (r = −0,19, IC à 95 % : −0,55, 0,22), tandis que le TFAST et le DASH (r = −0,36, IC à 95 % : −0,66, 0,04) ainsi que l'UPDRS et le DASH (r = 0,46, IC à 95 % : 0,08, 0,72) avaient une corrélation modérée.
