Claude Lanzmann (2001) described himself as a filmmaker of the immemorial in his film Shoah (1985). We can define the immemorial as that which has the force of eternity, that which is outside human duration and yet remains unrepresentable. The proposal for the aesthetics of cinema put forward by Lanzmann's work, which we shall attempt to elucidate, appears to be anchored in the reflections of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and his phenomenology of cinema around the 'measuring' point. For him, it is first and foremost the gaze that questions things. It is a measuring device for Being. If Lanzmann's camera and the staging of 'measurers' are indeed constituents of his films, the spoken word, the obsessive quest for a space-time of veracity and the filmmaker's personal involvement require us to summon up the notion of 'lived experience' linking Being to the past and the future. Let's put forward the hypothesis that Lanzmann made a cinema of 'measurers' in front of and behind the camera, seeking through a multifaceted device, far removed from mortifying and passive representations, to resurrect and make conscious a lived experience. Using the counter-example of the film Napalm (2015–2017), we will identify the dynamics at work in Lanzmann's cinema.
