Digitalisation, which constructs ‘reality’ from a model rather than referring to it indexically—thus ‘exploiting’ reality at will—invites a discretionary expansion of all the elements of its total environment. In this context, exploitation itself becomes transformable, functioning as a convention through which a transmedial perception of culture is activated. To illustrate how such a convention becomes operative, I analyse the 2020 film Antebellum, directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz. Although the film has been critically dismissed as ectypal—hence shallow and emotionally unreflective—I argue that it can be viewed as culturally unsettling and provocative when viewed from a non-traditional cinematic perspective. Este artículo afirma que el concepto de explotación, considerado negativamente durante mucho tiempo como sinónimo de una relación malsana con un fenómeno—material o de otro tipo—, ha experimentado una transformación radical en la era digital. La digitalización, que construye la "realidad" a partir de modelos en lugar de referirse a ella de forma indiciaria— "explotando" así la realidad a voluntad—invita a una expansión discrecional de todos los elementos de su entorno total. En este contexto, la propia explotación se convierte en transformable, funcionando como una convención a través de la cual activar una percepción transmedial de la cultura. Para ilustrar cómo se hace operativa una convención de este tipo, analizo la película de 2020 Antebellum, dirigida por Gerard Bush y Christopher Renz.
