Sumario:In the mid-1980s, the Church of England published Faith in the City, a report about urban conditions, focused primarily on how the Church should respond and secondarily on suggested Governmental interventions. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher understood the report as a referendum on her administration, but Immanuel Jakobovits, Chief Rabbi of the UK's Orthodox Congregations, came to Thatcher's defense in a rejoinder entitled From Doom to Hope. This essay analyzes both documents and fragments of Thatcher's responses, arguing that Jakobovits's support offered a greater claim to a moral basis for Thatcher's rhetorical theology of individualism.
